Can I do a TEFL course after 12th?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

Yes. Many TEFL courses accept learners who have passed Class 12 and have good working English; APTTI's TEFL/TESOL Certificate accepts Class 10 passes and its Diploma accepts Class 12. A TEFL certificate after 12th can lead to tutoring, spoken-English and online teaching work. Many jobs abroad, however, also ask for a bachelor's degree, so it helps to plan TEFL alongside a degree.

What this means in practice

TEFL after 12th works well as a skill qualification while you study for a degree, or as a route into part-time teaching. Check each course's entry rules; APTTI admissions will confirm your eligibility.

What you can do with TEFL and Class 12

  • tutor school students in English
  • teach in spoken-English institutes
  • teach on some online platforms that do not require a degree
  • assist in language centres and summer camps

What usually needs a degree

Work visas for teaching abroad often require a bachelor's degree. Indian government school posts require NCTE-recognised teacher education (D.El.Ed or B.Ed) and a TET or CTET pass for classes 1–8. TEFL does not replace these.

Studying TEFL alongside college

An online, self-paced course fits around college timetables. By graduation you will already have a teaching qualification and, ideally, some tutoring experience.

A sensible path after Class 12

A practical path is: start a degree; take a 120-hour TEFL course in your first or second year; tutor a few learners to build experience; add a specialism such as phonetics or young learners; then, after graduation, apply for online, institute or overseas roles, or go on to a B.Ed if you want a school career. Each step builds on the last, and you start earning from teaching while still studying.

Practical next steps

  1. Check that your spoken and written English is fluent.
  2. Choose a 120-hour course that accepts Class 12 learners.
  3. Start tutoring or volunteering to build experience.
  4. Plan a degree if you want to teach abroad or in schools.
  5. Add a specialism later, such as phonetics or young learners.
ExampleSneha finished Class 12 in Bhubaneswar and joined a BA programme. She took a 120-hour TEFL course in her first year and tutored two Class 8 students. By her final year she was teaching online in the evenings.

What to keep in mind

Do not expect a TEFL certificate alone to open government school jobs or visa-sponsored posts abroad. It works best combined with a degree and experience.

Common follow-up questions

Is there an age limit for TEFL?

Most providers ask that you are an adult (18 or over). There is no upper age limit.

Can a Class 12 student teach English online?

Some platforms accept teachers without a degree if they hold TEFL and speak fluent English; many do not, so check each platform's rules.

Is TEFL a good career option after 12th?

It is a good skill qualification to start early, especially for tutoring and online teaching, but most long-term teaching careers also need a degree.
