TEFL vs TESOL vs CELTA: which should you choose?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026

TEFL and TESOL are general terms for English-teaching certificates, offered by many providers, usually 120 hours or more and often online. CELTA is a specific Cambridge English qualification with at least 120 hours and assessed teaching practice with real learners; it costs more and is more intensive. For online and most overseas language-school jobs, a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL is usually enough.

Which should an Indian teacher choose?

  • teaching online or starting part-time: a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL
  • already teaching in a school and adding methodology: TEFL/TESOL plus a specialism
  • aiming for competitive language-school jobs abroad: consider CELTA or CertTESOL, or TEFL plus documented teaching practice
  • aiming for IELTS coaching: TEFL plus a Teaching IELTS course

TEFL vs TESOL in one line

TESOL covers both foreign-language (TEFL) and second-language (TESL) settings; employers treat certificates of equal hours the same way.

Common questions

Is CELTA better than TEFL?

CELTA is more intensive and includes assessed teaching practice, so it carries more weight with some employers. It is not necessary for many online and language-school jobs.

Can I do CELTA after TEFL?

Yes. Many teachers start with TEFL, gain experience, and take CELTA or a diploma later.

Is TESOL the same as TEFL?

In practice yes, for certificates of the same hours; TESOL is the broader term.
