Phonetics Course for Teachers: Teaching Phonetics Certificate
Clear pronunciation is one of the first things parents, learners and employers notice in an English teacher. This course teaches the phonetics and phonology an English teacher actually uses: how speech sounds are made, vowels and consonants, word stress and intonation, and weak and strong forms. It also shows you how to teach these to learners whose first language shapes their English.
APTTI's Teaching Phonetics course is a 60-hour, 5-module online certificate (4 months) for English teachers. It covers phonology and phonetics, the speech organs, articulation, vowels and consonants, stress and intonation, and weak and strong forms. Each module ends with multiple-choice questions, and advanced levels add projects, lesson plans or case studies. The certificate is notarised in Canada.

Before you enrol
Is phonetics the same as phonics?
No. Phonics teaches children to link letters to sounds for reading. Phonetics is the study of speech sounds themselves, which helps teachers model and correct pronunciation.
Will this course improve my own pronunciation?
Most teachers find it does, because you learn exactly how each sound is made and how stress and intonation work. It is designed as a teaching course, though, not an accent-change course.
Is there a live phonetics option?
Yes. APTTI also runs Live Phonetics batches with a trainer online. See the Live Phonetics course page.
