TEFL and TESOL basics

What is TEFL?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 3 min read

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. It means teaching English to people whose first language is not English, usually in a country where English is not the main language. A TEFL certificate, typically of at least 120 hours, is the standard qualification that language schools, online platforms and many employers abroad ask for.

What this means in practice

For an Indian teacher, TEFL is the qualification that turns good English into teachable English. It shows employers that you know how to plan lessons, explain grammar simply, build speaking skills and manage a class of learners at different levels.

What a TEFL course covers

A TEFL course trains you in methodology rather than in English itself. Expect modules on:

  • teaching the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • presenting grammar and vocabulary in context
  • lesson planning with clear aims and stages
  • classroom management and giving instructions
  • pronunciation basics
  • assessing learners and giving feedback

TEFL, TESOL, TESL and CELTA

TEFL and TESOL are used almost interchangeably. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the wider umbrella, and TESL refers to teaching English where it is a second language, as it is for many learners in India. CELTA is a specific, branded certificate from Cambridge English that includes observed teaching practice.

Why 120 hours matters

Most employers and online platforms treat 120 hours as the minimum for an entry-level TEFL certificate. Shorter courses are useful as introductions but are often not accepted for visas or job applications. Longer diplomas (around 200 hours or more) add depth and specialisms.

Who takes TEFL in India?

TEFL learners in India include school teachers who want stronger speaking-focused methods, graduates who plan to teach online or abroad, spoken-English and IELTS trainers who want a formal qualification, and homemakers and career changers building a flexible, home-based teaching career. Because the course is online, people join from metros and small towns alike, often studying in the evenings around work or family.

Practical next steps

  1. Check that your own English is strong and fluent.
  2. Choose a TEFL course of at least 120 hours.
  3. Decide where you want to teach: India, abroad or online.
  4. Add a specialism (young learners, Business English, IELTS or phonetics) that matches the jobs you want.
  5. Build a short teaching portfolio with sample lesson plans.
ExamplePriya, a commerce graduate in Pune, wanted to teach English online in the evenings. She took a 120-hour TEFL course, added a phonetics module to sharpen her pronunciation teaching, and used her course lesson plans as samples in her first job applications.

What to keep in mind

A TEFL certificate is a professional training qualification. It does not replace the B.Ed or D.El.Ed that Indian government schools require, and recognition varies by employer and country.
