Does a TEFL certificate expire?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

No. A TEFL certificate does not expire. Once you complete the course, the qualification is valid for life. Employers may still ask about recent teaching experience or further training, so keeping your skills current with short courses such as phonetics, young learners or IELTS teaching helps your applications.

What this means in practice

This is one of the most common questions from Indian teachers returning to work after a career break. The certificate itself stays valid; what changes is how recent your experience is.

Why employers ask about recent training

Methods, materials and online tools change. A teacher who took TEFL ten years ago and has taught since is in a strong position. One who has not taught for years may be asked about refresher training.

Keeping your profile current

  • add a specialist certificate (young learners, Business English, IELTS, phonetics)
  • take a live course for practice and feedback
  • keep a portfolio of recent lesson plans
  • teach a few hours a week, even online or as a volunteer

Lost certificate?

If you lose your certificate, contact the issuing institute for a replacement or verification letter. Keep a scanned copy and your enrolment details safe.

How to present an older TEFL certificate

On your CV, list the course title, hours, issuing institute and year, followed by your teaching experience since then. If there is a gap, add any recent short courses, webinars or live training. In interviews, be ready to talk about one recent lesson you taught and what you would do differently: that shows current practice better than any date on a certificate.

Practical next steps

  1. Store your certificate and grade sheet safely, with a scanned copy.
  2. List the course hours and issuing institute on your CV.
  3. Add recent training if you have had a break.
  4. Keep evidence of your teaching hours.
ExampleRekha completed TEFL in 2015, then took a six-year break. Before applying to online schools she took a Live TEFL refresher and a phonetics course, which gave her recent training and new sample lessons.

What to keep in mind

An individual employer's rules always take priority. If a job asks for training within a set period, follow it.
