Is TEFL equal to B.Ed in India?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

No. TEFL is not equal to a B.Ed in India. A B.Ed is an NCTE-regulated degree that qualifies you to teach in Indian schools, together with a TET or CTET pass for classes 1–8. TEFL is a professional certificate in English language teaching, valued by language institutes, online schools and employers abroad. Many teachers hold both.

What this means in practice

The two qualifications do different jobs. B.Ed is the gateway to school teaching posts in India; TEFL is the specialist skill set for teaching English as a language.

B.Ed vs TEFL

  • B.Ed: a degree-level teacher education programme regulated by NCTE
  • TEFL: a certificate or diploma in English language teaching methodology
  • B.Ed: required for most school teaching posts in India
  • TEFL: asked for by language schools, online platforms and many employers abroad

Why B.Ed teachers take TEFL

B.Ed covers general pedagogy across subjects. TEFL focuses on teaching English as a language: speaking skills, pronunciation, grammar in context and communicative activities. B.Ed English teachers often add TEFL to teach more effectively, to teach online, or to apply abroad.

Why TEFL teachers consider B.Ed

If you start with TEFL and later want a permanent school post in India, you will need the NCTE-recognised route and the relevant eligibility test.

What each qualification teaches

A B.Ed covers educational psychology, pedagogy across subjects, assessment, inclusive education and school internships, preparing you for the school system as a whole. A TEFL course goes deep on one thing: teaching English as a language, with communicative activities, pronunciation, grammar presentation and teaching mixed-level learners. The two complement each other well.

Practical next steps

  1. Decide whether you want school posts, language teaching, or both.
  2. For school posts, follow the NCTE route and eligibility tests.
  3. For language teaching, online work or jobs abroad, take a 120-hour TEFL.
  4. Combine both for the widest choice.
ExampleKavita holds a B.Ed and teaches English in a Jaipur school. She added TEFL and phonetics to run a stronger speaking programme and now also teaches adults online on weekends.

What to keep in mind

Rules for school recruitment are set by NCTE, CBSE and state governments, and they change. Check the current notification for any post you apply for.

Common follow-up questions

Can I teach in a CBSE school with only TEFL?

Most CBSE schools require a B.Ed for regular teaching posts. TEFL is valued as an additional qualification.

Should I do TEFL or B.Ed first?

If you want a school post in India, start with B.Ed. If you want online or abroad teaching soon, TEFL is faster.

Can TEFL be counted towards B.Ed admission?

No. B.Ed admission depends on your degree and the university's entrance rules; TEFL is not part of that eligibility.
