How to become an IELTS trainer in India

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

To become an IELTS trainer in India, you need very strong English (often around IELTS band 8 or equivalent), sound teaching methodology such as a 120-hour TEFL, detailed knowledge of the IELTS format and band descriptors, and practice teaching all four papers. No licence is required, but a Teaching IELTS certificate and a demo class help you get hired by coaching centres.

What this means in practice

IELTS coaching is a large industry in India, especially in Punjab, Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, driven by study and work abroad.

What coaching centres look for

  • excellent spoken and written English
  • a TEFL or similar teaching qualification
  • knowledge of the band descriptors for Writing and Speaking
  • the ability to give clear, specific feedback
  • a confident demo class

Trainer vs examiner

IELTS trainers prepare candidates. IELTS examiners, who mark Speaking and Writing, are recruited, trained and certified by the IELTS test partners themselves. A trainer course does not make you an examiner.

Earnings

Reported salaries for IELTS trainers in India range from roughly ₹1.8 lakh a year at entry level to ₹4 lakh or more for experienced trainers, with higher earnings from private and online coaching.

Building credibility as an IELTS trainer

Keep anonymised records of candidates' starting and final bands, collect written feedback, and share short model answers and tips online. Specialise in the paper candidates find hardest (often Writing Task 2 or Speaking), and keep up with official updates to the test. Credibility comes from results you can show, not from promises.

Practical next steps

  1. Check your own English level honestly, ideally by taking IELTS yourself.
  2. Take a 120-hour TEFL for methodology.
  3. Study the IELTS format and band descriptors in depth.
  4. Take a Teaching IELTS course.
  5. Prepare a 20-minute demo on Writing Task 2 or Speaking Part 2.
  6. Apply to coaching centres or start online coaching.
ExampleHarpreet, an English graduate in Jalandhar, scored band 8 on IELTS, then took TEFL and Teaching IELTS. Her demo class on Writing Task 2 paragraph structure won her a trainer post at a local centre.

What to keep in mind

Never promise candidates a particular band score. Results depend on the candidate's level and practice.

Common follow-up questions

Do I need to take IELTS myself to become a trainer?

It is not required, but a high band score is strong evidence of your level and helps you understand the test.

Can I teach IELTS online?

Yes. Many trainers coach candidates online in India and abroad.

What band score should an IELTS trainer have?

There is no official requirement, but many coaching centres look for trainers with around band 8 or equivalent proficiency.
