What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
IELTS Academic is for people applying to study at university or to register in some professions. IELTS General Training is for work, training and migration. Both have the same Listening and Speaking tests. Reading and Writing differ: Academic uses academic texts and a Task 1 describing a graph, chart or process; General Training uses everyday texts and a Task 1 letter.
What this means in practice
Trainers must know both versions, because coaching batches in India usually mix students heading abroad for study with workers and families applying for migration.
Same for both
- Listening: 4 parts, 40 questions
- Speaking: 3-part interview with an examiner
- scoring on the 9-band scale
Different
- Academic Reading: longer texts from books, journals and newspapers
- General Training Reading: notices, adverts, workplace documents and one longer text
- Academic Writing Task 1: describe visual information
- General Training Writing Task 1: write a letter
- Writing Task 2: an essay in both, with a slightly different style of topic
Teaching mixed batches
Teach Listening and Speaking together, then split for Reading and Writing Task 1. Writing Task 2 skills overlap heavily and can be taught together with different practice prompts.
Typical candidates in Indian IELTS centres
- students applying to universities abroad: usually Academic
- nurses and other health professionals: as required by the overseas registration body
- skilled workers and families applying to migrate: usually General Training
- people applying for certain UK visas: IELTS for UKVI, as specified
Practical next steps
- Ask each candidate why they need IELTS.
- Confirm the module their institution or visa requires.
- Group candidates by module for Reading and Writing.
- Use official practice materials for each module.
What to keep in mind
Which module a person needs depends on their university, employer, regulator or visa. Candidates must confirm it with them, not guess.
Common follow-up questions
Which IELTS is easier?
Neither is designed to be easier; candidates should take the module their institution or visa requires.
Is there a separate IELTS for UK visas?
Yes. IELTS for UKVI is a version approved for certain UK visa applications.
Can I switch from General Training to Academic later?
Yes, you can take whichever module you need for each application; results are separate tests.
