Phonetics and pronunciation

What is the difference between phonics and phonetics?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

Phonics is a method for teaching children to read and spell by linking letters and letter groups to the sounds they represent. Phonetics is the study of speech sounds themselves: how they are produced, heard and described, usually with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Phonics teachers use some phonetics; phonetics is wider and is used to teach pronunciation.

What this means in practice

Indian schools increasingly teach phonics in pre-primary and primary classes, while English teachers at all levels use phonetics to model and correct pronunciation.

Phonics in brief

  • purpose: early reading and spelling
  • learners: mainly young children
  • content: letter–sound links, blending and segmenting
  • example: 'sh' says /ʃ/ in 'ship'

Phonetics in brief

  • purpose: understanding and teaching pronunciation
  • learners: teachers, older learners and adults
  • content: speech organs, vowels, consonants, stress and intonation, IPA symbols
  • example: /ʃ/ is a voiceless post-alveolar fricative

Why English teachers need phonetics

English spelling is irregular, so learners cannot rely on letters to pronounce words. Phonetics lets teachers explain exactly how a sound is made and what is going wrong when a learner mispronounces it.

Using both in the Indian primary classroom

Many Indian schools now teach synthetic phonics in pre-primary and early primary. Teachers who also understand phonetics model sounds more accurately, notice when a child's first language changes a sound (such as /v/ and /w/), and can explain spelling patterns that phonics alone does not cover. The two work best together.

Practical next steps

  1. Learn the IPA symbols for English sounds.
  2. Practise identifying sounds in common words.
  3. Learn how each sound is articulated.
  4. Use minimal pairs to teach contrasts.
  5. Combine phonetics with phonics when teaching early readers.
ExampleA Class 2 teacher in Thiruvananthapuram uses phonics to teach reading 'ship' and 'chip'. When learners confuse the two sounds, she uses her phonetics training to show the different mouth positions.

What to keep in mind

Phonics programmes vary. Follow your school's chosen scheme, and use phonetics knowledge to support it.

Common follow-up questions

Do I need phonetics to teach phonics?

It helps a lot: knowing exactly how sounds are made improves your modelling and correction.

Which course covers phonetics for teachers?

APTTI's Teaching Phonetics and Live Phonetics courses cover phonetics for English teachers.

Is phonics taught in CBSE schools?

Many CBSE and other schools teach phonics in pre-primary and early primary classes, though the scheme and approach vary by school.
