TEFL and TESOL basics

What is TESOL and how is it different from TEFL?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It covers teaching English both as a foreign language (TEFL), where English is not used in daily life, and as a second language (TESL), where learners use English around them. In practice, TEFL and TESOL certificates of the same length are treated almost the same way by most employers.

What this means in practice

Many Indian institutes, APTTI included, title their course 'TEFL/TESOL' because Indian teachers often teach in both situations: English as a second language in Indian schools, and English as a foreign language online or abroad.

TEFL vs TESOL at a glance

  • TEFL: teaching English in a non-English-speaking setting, such as Vietnam or the Gulf.
  • TESL: teaching English where learners also use it in daily life, as in many Indian cities.
  • TESOL: the umbrella term covering both.
  • CELTA: a specific Cambridge-branded certificate with assessed teaching practice.

Which one should you choose?

Choose based on the hours, content and support of the course, not the label. A 120-hour TEFL/TESOL course with good tutor support is the usual entry point. If an employer names a specific qualification, follow what they ask for.

TESOL in India

In India, English is the medium of instruction in a large share of private schools while being a second or third language for most learners. That makes TESOL methods, such as building speaking confidence and teaching grammar in context, directly useful in Indian classrooms as well as abroad.

What a TESOL course teaches you to do

A good TESOL course leaves you able to plan a lesson with a clear aim, explain grammar through examples rather than rules alone, get every learner speaking through pair and group work, correct errors without discouraging learners, and adapt the same lesson for children, teenagers or adults. Those skills transfer directly between an Indian classroom, an online lesson and a language school abroad.

Practical next steps

  1. Read job adverts for the roles you want and note which qualification they name.
  2. Choose a course of at least 120 hours.
  3. Check that it covers methodology, lesson planning and classroom management.
  4. Look for tutor support and a clear assessment process.
ExampleArun teaches Class 6 English in a Hyderabad CBSE school and tutors adults online from the Gulf in the evenings. A TEFL/TESOL course helped him in both settings: second-language teaching at school and foreign-language teaching online.

What to keep in mind

The terms are not regulated, so the label alone tells you little. Check hours, content, assessment and who issues the certificate.

Common follow-up questions

What is the full form of TESOL?

TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Is TESOL better than TEFL?

Neither is better by name. Employers look at course hours, content and practice, not the label.

Is APTTI's certificate TEFL or TESOL?

APTTI awards a combined TEFL/TESOL certificate, so you can describe it either way when applying for jobs.
