How can teachers improve learners' English speaking skills?

By APTTI TEFL faculty · Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

Improve speaking by giving every learner more talking time: frequent pair and group tasks, information-gap activities, role-plays and discussions with clear goals. Provide useful phrases and thinking time before speaking, encourage fluency first, and give focused feedback afterwards. Short daily speaking routines work better than occasional long sessions.

What this means in practice

Speaking is the skill Indian parents, learners and employers most often ask English teachers to improve, and the one most squeezed by syllabus pressure.

Activities that get everyone talking

  • information-gap tasks: each partner has different information
  • role-plays based on real situations: shop, interview, phone call
  • opinion lines: learners stand on a line to show agreement
  • picture description and comparison
  • 'just a minute' talks on simple topics

Supporting hesitant speakers

Give sentence frames ('I think… because…'), let learners rehearse in pairs before speaking to the class, and accept short answers at first. Mother-tongue thinking time can help lower levels prepare ideas.

Feedback that helps

Note two or three common errors during the task and work on them afterwards with the whole class, without naming individuals. Praise successful communication as well as accuracy.

Measuring speaking progress

Record a short learner talk at the start of a course and again after a few weeks, using the same task. Compare fluency (pauses, length of turns), accuracy (target structures) and pronunciation (word stress, key sounds). Learners are often motivated when they hear their own improvement, and the recordings give you evidence for parents or managers.

Practical next steps

  1. Plan at least one pair-speaking task per lesson.
  2. Pre-teach key phrases.
  3. Give 1–2 minutes of thinking time.
  4. Monitor and note errors without interrupting.
  5. Give group feedback and repeat the task with a new partner.
ExampleIn a Lucknow spoken-English class, learners interview each other about weekend plans, change partners and repeat. By the third round they speak faster and use the target phrases naturally.

What to keep in mind

Some learners are anxious about speaking. Avoid public correction of individuals and build confidence gradually.

Common follow-up questions

How do I make students speak English in class?

Make speaking tasks short, purposeful and done in pairs first, with useful phrases provided.

Does correcting pronunciation discourage learners?

Gentle, selective correction focused on intelligibility helps; constant interruption discourages.

How can learners practise speaking outside class?

Voice-note tasks, speaking with a study partner, shadowing short clips and describing their day aloud all build fluency between lessons.
